What is Carnival?
The Notting Hill Carnival is an annual African-Caribbean originated event that takes place on the streets of Notting Hill, London every late August bank holiday weekend. Notting Hill Carnival has its origins in the carnival traditions of the Caribbean and the social and political conditions of the post-1948 migration of people from the Caribbean. The event began in 1964 when, our former Band Leader, Sterling Betancourt and Russell Henderson joined up with Rhaune Laslett to support her community family event. The steelband, later named Nostalgia Steelband, paraded around the streets wearing their pans around their necks and this enticed the local community and people of Carribean heritage to join in the event - which was subsequently formalised and named in 1966. Today carnival consists of many Mas bands, Steelbands, sound systems and costumes - not to mention merchandise and food. It is the biggest street festival in Europe and attracts up to 1 million spectators over the carnival weekend.
